  • Business Spotlight: Winter Ridge Natural Foods Has Fed Sandpoint the Natural Way Since 1997
The storefront of Winter Ridge Natural Foods Market in Sandpoint, its yellow sign above windows marked Bulk Foods and Supplements.

Every mountain town needs one grocery store that feels like it truly belongs to the place, and in Sandpoint that store is Winter Ridge Natural Foods. Sitting on Lake Street just blocks from Lake Pend Oreille, this natural foods market has been stocking local pantries and vacation kitchens since 1997, and it is the first stop many Schweitzer visitors make on their way up the mountain. Whether you are provisioning a condo for a ski week, grabbing lunch between errands, or hunting down a hard-to-find ingredient, Winter Ridge is built to be a one-stop shop with a distinctly North Idaho personality.

The store began with a family's problem. Gregg Prummer established Winter Ridge in 1997 after his son was diagnosed with Celiac disease, when gluten-free food was hard to locate in Sandpoint. He set out to build a store that catered to a multitude of dietary needs, drawing on his knowledge of herbs and homeopathy to stock supplements and wellness aids alongside good food. The idea caught on quickly: what started as a 1,700-square-foot storefront has grown into a full-service market of nearly 10,000 square feet, and the store describes itself as the largest natural foods store in the two northernmost counties of Idaho.

Inside, the departments cover just about everything a mountain household needs. The produce section leans organic and local, carrying in-season vegetables from area farms such as Red Wheelbarrow Produce, which also sends its spring plant starts to the store. The in-house deli and bakery cook and bake from scratch, with artisan breads and gluten-free baked goods that nod to the store's founding mission. Shoppers will also find local free-range meat and eggs, a bulk department with more than 200 offerings including a separate gluten-free bulk section, a deep bench of supplements and homeopathic remedies, environmentally friendly household goods, and a selection of local, organic, craft and imported beer, wine and ciders, plus a fresh floral department.

That mix is exactly why both locals and visitors keep coming back. For Schweitzer guests, Winter Ridge solves the practical side of a mountain stay in a single trip: breakfast supplies, deli lunches, dinner ingredients, snacks for the drive home, and the vitamins or remedies someone inevitably forgot to pack. For Sandpoint residents, it is simply the neighborhood market, one that proudly fills its shelves with the work of local farmers and producers and has grown up alongside the town it feeds. Its own motto sums up the approach in three words: local, natural, delicious.

You will find Winter Ridge Natural Foods at 703 Lake Street in Sandpoint. The store is open Monday through Saturday from 7:00 AM to 9:00 PM and on Sunday from 8:00 AM to 8:00 PM, and you can browse ahead at winterridgefoods.com. Next time you roll into town on your way to the mountain, build in a few extra minutes for a wander through its aisles. You will head up Schweitzer Mountain Road with a better-stocked kitchen, and probably with something from the bakery for the road.
