Did you know the very first snow of the season can set a deadline? Schweitzer Mountain Resort is celebrating the first flakes that fell over the mountain this past weekend with its First Flakes Lodging Flash Sale, and today, Wednesday, October 14, is the last day to book it. The resort is offering 20 percent off winter lodging for stays from November 27, 2026 through April 11, 2027, with a two-night minimum, at properties including the Humbird, Selkirk Lodge, White Pine Lodge and 5 Needles. The offer is based on availability, cannot be combined with other promotions, and blackout dates apply over the Christmas, Martin Luther King Jr. and Presidents Day periods. If you have been waiting for a sign to plan a ski trip, the calendar just gave you one.
That November 27 date matters, because it is Schweitzer's tentative opening day for the 2026-27 season, conditions permitting. The mountain is closed in the off-season right now, with no lifts or trails open and the resort's snow panels still blank this early, so please do not picture groomed runs just yet. What you can picture is a resort getting ready: Idaho's largest ski area, with 2,900 acres and 92 trails above Lake Pend Oreille, is heading into a transition winter and toward the future Schweitzer Creek Village base area, planned for the 2027-28 season with a new access road and roughly 1,400 parking spaces. The countdown from the first flakes to first chair is officially on.
And the weather on the mountain is cooperating with the mood. Schweitzer's own Mountain Report shows a partly cloudy morning up high: 40 degrees in the village, and a brisk 31 degrees at the summit, where a west wind is running at 22 miles per hour. The resort's village forecast calls for mostly sunny, clearing skies today with a high near 44, then 49 on Thursday and 52 on Friday, turning breezy by Friday. In other words, a classic crisp fall stretch on the mountain. Pack a warm layer, because the summit is running about nine degrees cooler than the village.
Wednesday is also a fine day to spotlight a Sandpoint favorite. Pend d'Oreille Winery, at 301 Cedar Street, pours Tuesday through Saturday from noon to 8 p.m., and tonight from 5 to 7 p.m. local pianist Peter Lucht performs contemporary and jazz tunes on the grand piano in the tasting room. It is an easy, walkable way to end a fall day downtown. Earlier this afternoon, the Sandpoint Farmers' Market returns to Farmin Park from 3 to 5:30 p.m. with local produce, baked goods and handmade work, ahead of its season-ending Harvest Fest on Saturday, October 17. The inaugural Sandpoint Idaho Film Fest also runs October 17 through 24 at venues around downtown.
So here is the gentle invitation from your hosts on the hill. Days like this, frosty at sunrise and golden by afternoon, are exactly when The Village Overlook earns its name, a warm, hotel-style studio above Schweitzer's ski village with Lake Pend Oreille spread out below. Come for a quiet fall evening now, or start dreaming about that late-November opening weekend while the first-flakes deadline ticks down today. Either way, we would love to welcome you to the mountain.
