Did you know some of the best ski days at Schweitzer this winter can be free for kids? Registration is now open in October for the Ski Idaho Peak Season Passport for 2026-27, which gives fifth graders three free ski or ride days and sixth graders two free days at each of 18 participating Idaho resorts, including Schweitzer. The passport is open to kids from any state or country, and the processing fee is 29 dollars for families who sign up before December 20, rising to 49 dollars after that date, so this month is the smart time to register at Skiidaho.us.
There is more early-season homework worth doing. The Sandpoint SARS Ski Swap returns November 14 at the Bonner County Fairgrounds, raising funds for the Schweitzer Alpine Racing School while helping families find skis, snowboards, boots and outerwear. Gear check-in for sellers runs November 13, with shopping from noon to 6 p.m. on swap day. Schweitzer itself remains closed in the off-season, with no lifts turning and no current snow report published, and its planned opening for winter is Friday, November 27, now just 45 days away.
On the mountain today, it is a crisp freeze-thaw fall day. The National Weather Service calls for widespread frost in Sandpoint mainly before 9 a.m., then sunny skies with a high near 56 degrees and light, variable wind. Tonight turns partly cloudy with a low around 32 degrees and patchy frost after 1 a.m. Higher up at Schweitzer, forecasts show a mostly dry day with summit temperatures in the upper 30s, no new snow expected, and a freezing level well above the summit, so enjoy the sunshine and watch for frosty, slick spots early.
For Tuesday travel, roads are the story. The Idaho Transportation Department is preparing a major Interstate 90 traffic shift between State Highway 41 in Post Falls and U.S. Highway 95 in Coeur d'Alene, targeted around October 20. Once it happens, both westbound lanes will move to the south side alongside eastbound traffic for about a year while crews rebuild the westbound lanes, with two lanes kept open each way, narrow shoulders, and the westbound rest area closed. Expect preparatory closures this month, check Idaho 511 before you go, and give yourself extra time on U.S. 95 and the climb up Schweitzer Mountain Road on frosty mornings.
In town, the calendar is building toward a busy weekend. The first Sandpoint Idaho Film Fest runs October 17 through 24 at venues throughout Sandpoint, with independent films across eleven categories including documentary, animation and action sports, opening with a film crawl on October 17. That same Saturday morning, the Fall Shoreline Clean Up gathers at Sandpoint City Beach Park. Both are fine reasons to be in town as fall color peaks around Lake Pend Oreille.
Thinking of being here for opening day, the film fest, or a quiet frosty weekend? The Village Overlook, our hotel-style studio on the hill above Schweitzer's ski village, is a warm and easy base for it all. Come watch the morning frost lift off the mountain, spend the day exploring Sandpoint, and settle in above the village lights at night. We would love to welcome you to the hill.
