  • Packed Fall Saturday in Sandpoint, and Schweitzer's Winter Plans Take Shape
NEXRAD radar image from the Spokane (KOTX) station showing light precipitation echoes over northern Washington with quiet conditions near Sandpoint, Idaho.

Happy Friday from the hill above the village. If you have been waiting for the perfect fall weekend in Sandpoint, this one might be it. Saturday stacks up like almost nothing else this season: Apple Fest downtown from 11 to 4 with a pie contest, apple slingshot, and prize giveaways; the Farmers' Market from 9 to 1 at Farmin Park; Matchwood Brewing's fourth annual Oktoberfest from noon to 6 with German-inspired food, steins, live music, and proceeds for the Bonner Community Food Center; the Teascarlet South gallery grand opening from 1 to 4; the Ponderay Rotary's Pints for Polio birthday bash for 98-year-old Marcella Nelson from 4:30 to 6:30 at Bluebird Bakery; and the Allman Brothers tribute Sons of Peaches at The Hive at 7. Tonight, choose between Shovels and Rope at the Panida Theatre and Babes in Canyon at The Hive, both at 7.

Plan your Saturday around the weather, because it changes character overnight. Today brings a chance of showers between 11 a.m. and 5 p.m. in Sandpoint, partly sunny skies, a high near 65 slipping to 59 in the afternoon, and a breezy south wind. Tonight the low drops to about 36 with patchy fog after 2 a.m., then Saturday settles into patchy morning fog and a partly sunny high of only 54. Up at the resort, today is cooler still with a 40 percent chance of showers, a high near 60 falling to 58, and tonight a 30 percent chance of showers before fog moves in. Enjoy today's mild air and give yourself an extra layer for Saturday's adventures.

On the mountain, Schweitzer is officially in shoulder season. The summer lift has spun its last lap, many outlets have closed, and the resort's own blog invites guests to slow down and soak in the quiet weeks before the village comes alive again. Did you know there is still plenty to do up there? Cambium Spa in the Selkirk Lodge is running massages, facials, and sauna time; Mojo Coyote Cafe is serving coffee, breakfast, and lunch; Crow's Bench is pouring craft cocktails with a seasonal menu; and Pucci's Pub is the place to hang with the locals. Looking ahead, the 2026-27 ski season is tentatively set to begin November 27, and this winter's lineup includes private night skiing, the Learn to Ski in 3 package, a Women's Wednesdays program, a Crow's Bench Cellar Dinner, and a Rowdy Grouse elopement package. No lifts are turning yet, and nobody is claiming otherwise, but the mountain is clearly gearing up.

This morning's KOTX radar shows light precipitation echoes drifting across the northern part of the region, with the Sandpoint and Schweitzer area quiet for now. A little rain clears the air today, then crisp, genuinely fall air settles in for the weekend. Saturday's wind shifts out of the northeast and Sunday tops out near 49 in town and 46 at the resort, so keep the warm jacket handy even if the sun is out.

And here is the host thought for the day: fall at Schweitzer might be the area's best-kept secret. The village is peaceful, the lake views from the hill are at their most dramatic under those big October skies, and downtown Sandpoint is fifteen minutes down the road with a weekend like this one. The Village Overlook sits right up here on the hill above the village, an easy drive to the Oktoberfest, Apple Fest, and everything the weekend holds. If you have been thinking about a quiet getaway before the snow flies, this is your moment.
